Very Grand at The Grand Hotel Plaza, Roma
Reviewer: Rome visitor, London, England

What a wonderful stay my husband and I hadat the Grand Hotel Plaza, Roma. Valentines Weekend could not have been anymore romantic ....Our room overlooked SpanishSteps. To wake up to this view every morning withbreakfast on our little terrace was simply a joy.Nothing was too much of a problem for the friendly and helpful staff. We found the ambience of the main hall incredible as we felt we had our very own sistine chapel dometo observe while having a cornetto and cafe.

I had read the reviews but it was the best hotel available with expedia package, and I so requested 3 rooms over a courtyard. Two rooms were great, the third had a double instead of twin beds and there was no room to add a cot bed, so we were moved to dark, cramped and smoky room that was incredibly noisy from street traffic. The other two rooms were first class, one was spectacular in size and amenities and charm, so you really need to ask for courtyard/garden view and inspect/reject rooms when you get there. Service was odd to say the least, phone instructions impossible, no internet capability or business office, and I asked repeatedly about a fed ex I was waiting for (and according to fed ex had been delivered) till one staffer vaguely recalled that a fed ex had come in and showed me it. On the other hand, buffet was excellent, hotel lobby, main rooms and bar were fabulous and a throw back to the days of truly grand hotels. The family loved it, and the location. I would opt for a smaller, more service oriented hotel next time. If I stayed there again, I would insist on a quiet room with a garden view.

Worst experience ever

This is the worst hotel we have ever stayed at... anywhere. The concierge desk staff was civil at best - completely unhelpful and downright unfriendly at times. We did not ask much of them -simple things like help with restaurant reservations and train timetables. The rooms (and we were in a deluxe, mind you) were large but ill-equipped. When you're paying upwards of $400 per nite, a complimentary bottle of water doesn't seem like too much to ask. Mattresses were old and uncomfortable, the bathrooms were extremely small (even for European standards). There was absolutely NO soundproofing: the Corso is VERY noisy with loud people at nite and sirens constantly blaring up and down it in the middle of the nite plus you hear every single noise from the rooms on either side of you. The maid service was barely passable (they kept putting our dirty glasses back on top of our minibar - how much does it cost to give us clean glasses each day?). They can't even provide guests with those free cityguides that most hotels do. They seemed genuinely uninterested in the comfort of their guests. Luckily, we moved to the De La Ville Intercontinental for the 2nd week of our stay in Rome - heaven compared to this dump. We usually stay in nicer hotels when we travel, but I do remember the budget hotels I stayed at on a previous trip to Italy in my grad student days - this hotel doesn't even compare to the $70/nite hotels I've stayed in. And in terms of location, yes, it's nice. But there are no less than five other hotels that are much more worth the money with the same convenience - including the Intercontinental.
