Fantastic Empire stile hotel

Just returned from Westin Excelesior in this evening. Excellent services, house-keepers very careful, at restaurant Doney very good food and service, Luca from the lobby bar is the best barman and the overall impression of this establishment is excellent. Higly recommended.

Vita La Dolce!

Definitely la dolce vita, the sweet Life, we traveled to Rome over Thanksgiving with our 2 daughters ages 12 and 16, we booked 2 rooms at the Westin Excelsior and loved the stay.Check in: Very smooth, 1st name basis and professional, reception directly ushered us to our room, and our bags immediately followed. Very nice, complementary fruit tray waiting for us.Curb Appeal: It is the best looking hotel in Rome, only the Marriott at the top of the hill 1 block up on Via Veneto was even close, very wide sidewalks (Unlike other Rome streets) and great shopping. The Exedra seemed to compare in terms of 1st impression (Very busy hub however), other top hotels we saw St Regis, Hassler, Splendide, and Eden looked very run down from outside, but we did not go inside.Rooms: The King Bed was a full king mattress sitting on two twin bed frames and it was very comfortable, Simmons December beauty rest with luxurious bedding. Size of Delux room was grand estimated about 900 sq ft. some dirt stains on the carpets. Bathroom, very clean and large, full marble with high volumes of hot water. Best bathroom I have been in, and we travel a lot. Our girls kept going back in the afternoon to take bubble baths, gorgeous marble baths with separate showers. Downside is limited American TV channels, MTV for kids only, CNBC for me. Complementary caviar with Champaign on 3rd day, a bit over the top for the girls room but we enjoyed. Turndown service and house keeping was generally on time plus or minus 2 hours.Breakfast: Unless included I would bypass the Doney and go across street to Paris, we had it in the room price. 3 tables, 1st is 5 different Juices and Champaign, 2nd is Scramble eggs, bacon, sausage, fried potatoes, and Tomatoes, 3rd is dry cereals and fresh fruits, wall table has European pastries, cheeses and meats. Capacinos are very good! But for 40 EURO/person?Pools: Very small pool, hot tub was broken on the last days of our stay and is not heated. The Steam bath is the best I have ever been to, very plush. Workout center small but has most of the stand alone machines, cardio and dumbbells for a good workout. Wood floors and class.Location: 10 minute walk to the Spanish steps, head straight down Ludowski passed the Eden. Good trade-off of luxury, quite rooms vs access. We walked everywhere including to trip to the Vatican. About 45 minutes to get to the Vatican with stops. I lost about 5 pounds in Rome, felt like being on a stairmaster.Food: Other than breakfast did not eat at the hotel, best for us was the Argentina steakhouse (110 EUROs for 4 Filets and wine) just across the street and down from Harrys bar. Stay away from Ciao Bella Roma just down from Alexandra hotel on walk down Via Veneto, a rip off. We ate twice at the hard rock, 1 block from the hotel, very good burgers and deserts.The Dalai Lama checked in the last day before our departure. Overall a great stay 5 star stay, may try the Marriott or Exedra next time just to check it out.

We recently stayed a week at the Excelsior. While the location is excellent, and the service very nice, the room and hotel were just OK overall. When we checked in initially, we were shown to a very large, beautiful room with what was supposed to be a king sized bed. This was in fact two twin beds about a foot apart that they said could be put together. When they put the beds together, of course, there were separate mattresses and separate bedcoverings that were very tightly tucked between the two beds. If my husband and I were planning to sleep together, we'd have been battling that crack between the two beds and the separate covers the whole week. I returned to the desk to inquire about a room with a king bed with one mattress. We were then shown to a very small, rather shabby room on the sweltering 5th floor, but the bed was very nice. The hotel was booked and they told us those were our choices. We chose the more comfortable sleeping together arrangements, but ended up being very crowded in this room. The corridor outside the room very consistantly smelled of sewer gas. The restaurant breakfast was mediocre. I wouldn't stay there again, I think the same amount of money could get you nicer accomodations in a good area.
