Beamed ceilings and tile walls remind diners of old-world Rome , yet the menu is contemporary. Seafood dominates the bill, and dishes such as panzerotti di pesce in salsa di mazzancolle (homemade ravioli stuffed with fish, in a light prawn sauce) and rombo in crosta di patate con salsa ai funghi porcini (flounder baked in a potato crust, with porcini mushroom sauce) make the most of seasonal ingredients. Monte Caruso stands out from the pack of mediocre places that surround the train station. Low arches and tiled floors create a warm, elegant setting. The menu focuses on food from Lucania, an area of Italy divided between the southern regions of Basilicata and Calabria . The name says it all. For years, Filetti di Baccalà has been serving just that -- battered, deep-fried fillets of salt cod -- and not much else. The Roman specialty doesn't require much accompaniment. You'll find no-frills starters such as bruschette al pomodoro (garlic-rubbed toast topped with fresh tomatoes and olive oil), and in winter months the cod is served alongside puntarelle, a crunchy Roman green topped with a delicious anchovy vinaigrette.
